June 2025 update from the Commission

27 June, 2025

At this time of year, small business owners are working hard to ensure a smooth transition into the new fiscal period. While it can be an extremely busy time, it is also an important opportunity for them to review their financial health and obligations and wrap up compliance tasks. In particular, there are a number of key taxation and financial measures to be mindful of that are changing on 1 July 2025. This includes the increase to the National Minimum Wage and Award wages from 1 July, and small business owners should review their arrangements accordingly.

Disasters can impact communities in a variety of ways and the people who help them through it deserve to be recognised. Invercauld House in the Northern Rivers was an unlikely hero during the 2022 floods, offering support for local small businesses in need. Invercauld House shows how important relationships are during a disaster to maintain resilience and business continuity.

The NSW Budget for 2025-26 was recently handed down, including investments delivered as part of the innovation blueprint package and other measures that support industry development.

From 1 July 2025, a new tobacco licensing scheme will come into effect in NSW. This will require all retailers and wholesalers to hold a licence to sell tobacco and non-tobacco smoking products. Retailers and wholesalers are encouraged to apply for a licence from 1 July.

Held each October, Small Business Month brings together government, industry and community organisations to celebrate the state’s small business sector. In preparation for the month, registration is now open for businesses to join in collaborative partnerships. This includes hosting events that support the small business community while also benefitting the partnering business through networking, exposure and meaningful engagement.
