Sydney trains to ban converted e-bikes from November
29 September, 2025
From 1 November, converted e-bikes will be banned from Sydney Trains, NSW Trainlink and Metro services, following growing safety concerns about lithium-ion battery fires.
Transport for NSW (TfNSW) defines converted e-bikes as regular pedal bicycles that have been retrofitted with motors and batteries. These bikes pose a higher fire risk due to DIY modifications, poor wiring, and second-hand or incompatible parts. Other e-bikes and mobility devices are not affected by the ban.
TfNSW has confirmed the ban will not cover station areas such as concourses, lifts, escalators or bike storage facilities outside ticket gates. People using community access gates can also keep using these as normal.
Carrying a converted e-bike on the rail network will attract an on-the-spot fine of $400, with a potential maximum penalty of $1,110. Small businesses and delivery workers who rely on carrying e-bikes on trains are encouraged to check their equipment and ensure compliance to avoid penalties.
