May 2025 update from the Commission

The recent floods and heavy rain across NSW have been devastating for many of our small businesses. For the latest information about the assistance available, including the range of resources and guidance, see here.  

If your business was impacted, we want to hear from you. The Commission, together with the NSW Reconstruction Authority, is conducting a survey to better understand the impacts on our business community. Your participation in this survey is invaluable in helping us assess the impact and plan effective support and recovery efforts for businesses. The survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. 

The March 2025 Small Business Insights Quarterly report offers a summary of key insights, trends and data gathered from the Commission’s activities. During the quarter, small business confidence remained subdued owing to high business costs, weak demand and an uncertain economic outlook. An overview of the Commission’s key contributions and advocacy activities can be found in the report. 

Unfortunately, small businesses are an easy target for cyber criminals. Unlike other businesses, smaller operators may not have a dedicated IT team to counter cyber threats, nor the financial resources to invest in dedicated solutions to safeguard their digital assets. The good news is that improving your cyber security doesn’t have to be expensive or complex. There are some key resources that outline the steps you can take

The new portable long service leave scheme comes into effect from 1 July 2025. It offers workers in the community services industry eligibility for long service leave after seven years in the industry, regardless of the number of employers. Employers should be aware of their obligations, particularly the need to register with the Long Service Corporation, record worker hours and pay a levy. 

Making sure your business name is protected is a key step for your business. Aside from registering your business or company name with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), it is important to register a trademark to ensure your business name, logo or slogan is protected.
