Lessons and tips from ATI Art School & Centre: a small business journey
31 October, 2025
Starting and growing a small business often involves navigating unfamiliar territory, especially for those new to the local business landscape. Atefeh Hekmat, founder of ATI Art School & Centre in NSW, shares her journey and the lessons she learned along the way – offering valuable insights for aspiring entrepreneurs.
Atefeh’s background in psychology and photography, her experience as an artist overseas, along with her lived experience as a refugee, shaped her vision for a creative business that prioritises inclusivity and personal expression. She began her art business from her garage, gradually expanding to a studio and gallery spaces in Wentworthville and Carlingford, and continues to explore new opportunities for growth.
Despite her expertise in the arts, Atefeh faced challenges common to many new business owners: language barriers, limited understanding of local business systems and regulations, and the need to build visibility and trust in the community. Her experience highlights several key takeaways:
Let your story guide you – your personal journey and values can be a powerful foundation for your business idea and vision. This will also help you build meaningful connections with your customers and local communities.
Seek support and mentorship – starting a business doesn’t mean going it alone. Look for programs and networks that align with your goals. Support with planning, digital tools, and navigating regulations can make a significant difference.
Don’t let language barriers hold you back – use language to your advantage. Explore opportunities to utilise your language skills and connect with others. Don’t be afraid to practice the unfamiliar at every opportunity. Like anything, a new skill will gradually improve over time.
Adapt to your customers’ needs – be flexible in how you deliver your services – whether through different formats, locations, or accessibility options. This can help you reach a wider audience.
Let your community speak for you – word-of-mouth and community engagement can complement traditional advertising. Encourage customer feedback and share real stories that reflect your business and goals.
Stay committed to your passion – building a business takes time and resilience. Stay focused on your purpose, invest in relationships, and make use of the resources available to you.
