April 2025 update from the Commission
1 May, 2025
In April, the NSW Small Business Commission visited the Northern Rivers region to meet with small businesses, local chambers, industry associations and council representatives.
The visit focused on listening to local perspectives and understanding the impacts of exTropical Cyclone Alfred. Northern Rivers and Central West businesses can sign up for a free online training program offered from May to July. Provided by the NSW Reconstruction Authority, the program is designed to help you plan for disasters, build essential business continuity capabilities and work together to overcome future challenges.
It’s important to protect your business interests before entering a contract, including by carefully considering who you do business with. The Commission recently published essential steps for business operators to assess prospective business partners before entering into agreements. It is recommended they conduct thorough due diligence, such as verifying financial health, checking for insolvency, or identifying outstanding debts.
The NSW Government is implementing reforms to combat illicit tobacco sales, including a new licensing scheme for retailers and significantly increased penalties for offenders. Retailers with a current Retailer Identification Number (RIN) will receive information from NSW Health outlining what steps they will need to take if they wish to apply for a licence. Members of the public who wish to report illicit tobacco activity can do so via: https://reportsmokingvaping.health.nsw.gov.au/.
With the end of the financial year approaching, the Commission and the Australian Taxation Office are hosting a free webinar to provide practical tips and advice to help you manage your tax obligations. Key topics will include income and record keeping, deductions, key deadlines, common pitfalls, and where to go for help. The webinar will be held on Thursday, 29 May 2025 at 12pm.
