3G networks shutting down this year

Upgrade older devices to avoid disruption

18 April, 2024

TPG Telecom (Vodafone), Telstra, and Optus are continuing their rollout of the 3G network closure this year. The Vodafone network closed in December of 2023, with Telstra scheduled to shut down on 30 June 2024 and Optus due in September 2024.

The closures will impact devices other than mobile phones. Older devices such as tablets, modems, smart watches, security systems, medical equipment and payment machines may be reliant on the 3G network. It is best to contact your service provider or manufacturer if you are unsure if your device will be affected.

Telcos are urging customers to upgrade their devices ahead of time to avoid being caught out by the change. 3G only devices and some older 4G devices that do not have the VoLTE (Voice over Long Term Evolution) feature will be impacted.

The top 25 most common devices that may be affected can be found on the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association factsheet.
