NSW Small Business Regulation ‘Red Tape’ Survey

A priority for the NSW Small Business Commissioner is reducing red tape and making it easier for small business to operate. NSW small businesses consistently tell us that red tape and compliance obligations are a major concern impacting their operations.

As part of our work on red tape reduction, during small business month in October 2025 the Commission formally sought feedback from small businesses and their representative bodies about their experiences with regulation in NSW.  The aim was to better understand the processes, systems, and requirements that make it difficult for small businesses to comply with government regulations, for example, applications forms, registration and licensing processes, and reporting obligations.

The insights gathered will help the Commission identify opportunities to simplify regulatory processes, reduce unnecessary administrative burden, and improve support for small businesses.

The survey and consultation have now closed.

Thank you to all small businesses who generously found time to participate in our consultation. We are reviewing the feedback received from small businesses and other stakeholders. It is anticipated the outcomes from our consultation will begin to be finalised in early 2026.

Updates will be posted to this page as and when available.

All responses have been treated confidentially, and no individual or business will be identified in the findings. For more information on how we use and store data, please look at our privacy policy by clicking here.
