May 2026 Update from the Commission

In May, the Commission welcomed Ms Kalina Koloff who commenced as the new NSW Small Business Commissioner. Bringing extensive experience across government, regional engagement and economic development, Ms Koloff has also experienced firsthand the realities of running a small business. Her leadership will help continue the Commission’s work advocating for small businesses, reducing barriers and supporting thriving local economies across the state.

May also saw the release of the 2026–27 Federal Budget, with several measures relevant to small businesses announced and the Commission has also highlighted updated guidance released by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) regarding the proposed cash acceptance mandate. 

With the end of financial year approaching, businesses should be preparing, reviewing key obligations, financial records and planning priorities ahead of 30 June. Small businesses may wish to review cash flow, tax obligations, superannuation, payroll systems and business performance more broadly as part of their year-end preparations. Taking time to plan now can help businesses enter the new financial year with greater clarity and confidence.

This coming June, to support businesses impacted by Great Western Highway closure at Victoria Pass, the Commission is hosting free workshops designed to provide practical guidance and support measures. Businesses affected by the closure are encouraged to stay connected and participate in upcoming sessions where possible.

Looking ahead, preparations are already underway for NSW Small Business Month 2026, which will again bring together businesses, government, industry and community organisations to celebrate and support the small business sector across the state. Small Business Month provides valuable opportunities for learning, networking and collaboration through events held across metropolitan and regional NSW.
