ATO support available for small businesses impacted by fuel costs

29 April, 2026

With ongoing fuel price pressures affecting cash flow, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has introduced temporary support measures to help small businesses stay on track. As part of the National Fuel Security Plan, these measures include a short-term reduction in fuel excise and changes to fuel tax credit rates, aimed at reducing operating costs for fuel‑dependent businesses.

Eligible businesses and sole traders may also apply for a temporary ATO fuel response payment plan. This tailored arrangement offers no upfront payment, allows tax debts to be repaid over up to 36 monthly instalments, and includes potential remission of general interest charges, provided payments and lodgments remain up to date. The payment plan is available for new or existing tax debts where businesses can show their ability to pay has been directly impacted by higher fuel costs. Applications are open until 30 June 2026.

In addition, the ATO continues to offer existing support options such as PAYG instalment variations, payment deferrals, priority processing of refunds, and remission of penalties and interest. Businesses experiencing difficulty are encouraged to act early and speak with their registered tax or BAS agent, or contact the ATO, to explore the most appropriate support available. Additional information can be found on the ATO’s website
